When a problem arises or we have an important doubt that needs to be answered immediately we will need that our provider give us support in a fast and effective way. Before contracting our dedicated hosting we can verify the methods of its technical support department by sending them an email on a generic question about their servers to test response times and answer quality. Although sometimes, and since we are not yet clients, it could not be representative of its technical support, at least it will give us a general concept of the kind of work they do.
We must make sure that our future server will have all the technical specifications that we are going to need to develop our web site. As an example, if we are going to need hosting for multiple domains we will have to make sure that this option will be available, maybe we will also want several IP address in the same machine. Another example could be that we had planned to use an specific database engine, case of Microsoft SQL Server, then we will have to make sure that they have a Windows dedicated server to acomplish this point and the possibility of installing Microsoft SQL Server. It is advisable that our provider has different platforms (Linux, Windows, UNIX) that would make easy for us to migrate the server in future if necessary.
Talking about price our better option is to surf and make our own comparatives between the diverse dedicated hosting providers available in the net. Sometimes we can find great differences between different providers. If we have doubts in that case we can ask to them and decide if their explanations on the matter are reasonable. In any case it is smart to think that if an offer is too good to be true, it probably is. Sometimes resources are sacrificed (no matter they are human or technical) to offer very low prices that will cause us trouble in the long term.
